Course on starting solids

“O da! Eda!” (“Oh yes, food!”)

When should you start, what and how should you feed, how do you plan a complete diet for your baby and build healthy eating behaviour? The “O da! Eda!” course is a practical guide to helping your child build a harmonious relationship with food.

When to start solids, and with what?

Some say start at 4 months with jarred purées, others say wait a little and cook yourself after all? On the course we'll work out when to start, what and how to feed, based on your baby's physiology and development, motor readiness and common sense.

Who the course is for

For mums of babies aged 3 to 9 months. Whether you are just getting ready to introduce solids and want to understand how it all works, or you've already started and something has gone wrong, you'll find useful information on foods for your baby, suitable textures, serving finger foods safely and the main stages of your child's eating.

What else you'll learn

  • the most reliable information on starting solids from leading nutrition organisations
  • how to help your child eat with appetite without cooking separate meals for them
  • how food can support your child's health
  • what you do and don't need to buy (high chair, dishes, cutlery)

…and much more!

More than food: my approach

The approach to starting solids has changed radically over the past decade. Today we talk less and less about how many grams of purée a baby should eat or how many times a day to sit them at the table, and more about how to build their relationship with food. At the heart of this approach is responsive feeding: parents follow their child's own cues rather than tables from the internet or food introduction schedules that have nothing to do with their child.

Intuitive weaning: what is it?

I've always wanted the approach to starting solids that I talk about on social media, on the course and in consultations to have a name. There's the paediatric approach, the pedagogical one, BLW, and then… what?

There is the concept of “intuitive eating”, based on the idea that paying attention to the body's signals — hunger and fullness — is the most effective way to regulate eating behaviour.

So I'd like to call the approach I believe in “intuitive weaning”: the parent, responsible for the child's nutrition, listens to the child's cues and feeds responsively, without pressure or force, nurturing healthy eating behaviour.

  • the order of introducing foods, stages of weaning, introducing special food groups
  • serving food safely: from purées to pieces; learning to chew
  • your baby's reactions to solids, allergy prevention, what to do if negative reactions appear
  • breastfeeding/formula feeding and starting solids
  • building healthy eating behaviour
  • eating after the first birthday, preventing selective eating

About me

Yulia Klimanova is a children's nutrition consultant from birth to adulthood: breastfeeding and formula feeding, starting solids, organising meals for the child and the whole family, and feeding therapy for children with eating difficulties. Author of seminars and courses on children's nutrition.

“Sensible weaning isn't about charts, or swapping breastfeeding for ordinary food on a schedule that has nothing to do with a particular family's diet and traditions and ignores the baby's appetite. It's a big and important part of a child's development.

Working with children of different ages and helping them build healthy eating habits, I see how important it is to introduce solids properly — taking into account the child's readiness and motor skills, without force or pressure. And I can teach you how: a different way to introduce family food so your baby eats with appetite and you have no reason to worry!”
